Balancing Life & Self Care + Spiced Milk Recipe

I spoke with a friend recently who was like "Sarah, I don't know how you do it all!"

I told her something, and I want to share with you too. 

I shower an average of 5 days a week. I raise my voice. My small kitchen is always trashed. I drop f bombs. {Sometimes in front my 5 year old.} Ive learned to complete most things in shifts. I eat chocolate. We're always late. When I can, I stay in my PJs all day and cook. I shop the sales rack at discount stores. I give Ziggy lollipops and let him watch cartoons. Until about 6 months ago, I drove a car that had a tape deck. Yes, a tape deck. 

I am no different than anyone. I am just a thirty something first time mom. Like many of you, I am trying to navigate this season of my life… figuring out how to balance a career, raise a toddler, grow a baby, prioritize self care, keep my marriage and friendships alive.

It's easy to get caught up in the highlight reel. But let’s be real; nobody really has their shit fully together. Some days it’s not easy to release living up to the standard of perfection that is portrayed in the media. To look at what everyone else is “doing” and not feel adequate enough. But I need to tell you something.

 

YOU ARE ENOUGH.

 

Allow yourself to feel the way that you need to feel, even if that means not being okay some days. Allow yourself to be supported. Allow yourself to hang up your superwoman cape. To do what makes you feel good, continue to live in a way that makes you feel good and inspires you--let the rest go.

And above all, remember that you're doing a really great job. ❤️

 

Speaking of self care, you have to try this simple recipe for spiced milk. It warms the soul, satisfies a sweet tooth and has anti-inflammatory powers:

dairy free, gluten free, vegan

What You'll Need:

1 1/2 c unsweetened almond or coconut milk.

1/4 tsp ground ginger

1/4 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp turmeric

 1/8 tsp pure stevia

Heat milk, whisk in spices. Sip to your hearts delight!

Easy Foods to Stock up on Leading Up to & Post Baby 🤰🏻👶🏼 (or when life gets crazy)

We're expecting a baby any day now, and I told my hubs Chris last night that I was going on our last big grocery shopping trip to stock up on the essentials.  {like I have control on when this babe will come of something, ha!}  

If you're wondering if I did this same type of planning and preparing 5 years ago when we were expecting Ziggy that answer is a big-fat-no.  I did a lot of winging it back then, in every sense of the word, and stocking our freezer or planning for postpartum nutrition was NOT the first thing on my radar.  I mean, I don’t think it was on my radar at all.

I've learned a lot since then--one big, KEY lesson is how something seemingly insignificant (the food I put into my body) impacts my mood, my energy, my sleep, my patience, and generally how I operate on the day to day.  I've also learned that a little planning or prep can save me lots of time and headaches when life gets cray (because it does....like all the time).

So, whether you're about to have a baby....or are just living your life waiting for a day to throw you a curve ball (cause it will), the resources I've pulled together are going to be super valuable!

33 Weeks Pregnant and Painting

It’s sometimes wild looking at a before and wondering how you lived with it for that long 😳 *tap to expand see bedroom transformation*

While I put the final coat of paint on these walls a couple weeks ago, my grandmother called to wish me a happy birthday.

“You’re painting on your birthday?!”

“Yup! Totally not enjoying this part, but know I will enjoy the outcome.”

Sure, painting while 33 weeks pregnant was definitely not the highlight of my week. 🤰🏻

But I loved creating a vision for what I wanted to room to look like..picking out the paint..working on a project with Chris..going to home goods and picking out new tiny touches..reorganizing the space.

The only part that really sucked was the painting part.

And I’m so glad I stuck with it because our bedroom is a much more beautiful place
to be !! 😍

So when you find yourself wrapped up in the part of the journey that feels hard.. the part that you hate the most.. the part that you find yourself complaining about..

..shift your focus to your vision, the process you’re in, and all the little pieces along the way that actually give you joy. 🧚🏼‍♂️

You don’t have to go fast. You just have to go ❤️

Lessons from a 4 Year Old

Aghhh this sweet child of mine. 😍

We learned we were expecting him just about 5 1/2 years ago. We weren't ready, and I cried. A lot.

Well you know how they say that there’s a positive intention in everything?

He's taught me that my body is powerful, resilient and strong. He's retaught me that the simple things are the most special; the sunshine, new experiences, and that laughter is the best medicine. 🌞

He reminds me to be fearless, the true meaning of patience, and the power of a good nights sleep. 🌜

And, a consistent reminder that it’s reallyyyyyy easy to put yourself on the back-burner when you are focusing on the people that you love. 👨‍👩‍👧

We want to bring our A game -- to be alive and engaged, which means it's easy to put yourself last. 🤦🏻‍♀️

But I’ve learned something really important...

I can't bring my A game when I’m depleted, exhausted, overworked, over committed, and consistently putting my needs last. 🚫

When I do, he ends up cheated. He doesn’t get the best version of me, he gets a worn down, depleted, cranky, walking dead version of me. 💀

And if Ziggy gets that, we all know what Chris gets 😳🙈

When I’m trying to be everything to everybody, do all the things, wear all the hats, be everywhere all the time... all while thinking I’m bringing my A game, but instead am bringing my B, or C or D game.

He’s taught me to be honest about what I want, what I need, what deserve, and how to re-prioritize and HONOR what is most important.

Who knew someone under 4 feet tall could teach someone this much!?

It’s pretty wild. If I knew what a positive impact this little person was going to have on my life, I wouldn't have cried so much. ❤️

Figuring Out All the Diet Advice

As I savored every bite of breakfast this morning, I couldn’t help but think about how grateful I am to have figured all of this diet crap out. 🙌🏻

For the longest time, I didn’t eat breakfast. I figured, well, one less meal means that many fewer calories. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Then that period of time where I banned carbs. I don’t even want to talk about it. I think I had PTSD for a long time afterward. 🤬

Then there was that period of time I had a meal replacement shake daily for breakfast. Great on occasion, but MAN was I hangry and already eating a second breakfast 2 hours later. 👿

All of this confusion and trauma, coupled with my journey to naturally balancing my hormones + irritable bowels, inspired studies in what the 5% of people who are succeeding are doing right. 💁🏻‍♀️

{Yup you read that right. 95% of our attempts to get the body and health that we want are failing, which is why we’re constantly searching for a new solution}

Why aren't there enough recipes for 3 meals per day, 7 days per week?

Because many of them would go to waste!  We generally tend to bite off more than we can chew (figuratively and literally, ha!)  Plus, not every {one} body thrives from a 100% plant-based diet.  This is about beginning to layer in some more plant-centered meals,  all while keeping you out of overwhelm and into action!

Second Trimester Workout

Imagine if we lived in a world where babies stopped their attempts at walking the first time they lost balance and landed on their behinds. 🍑

We would have a world full of grown humans, who were perfectly capable of a skill they gave up on, and would have missed out on a lifetime of other things because of it. 👶🏼

Thankfully, babies are determined and resilient. They fall. They fall hard. And they do it over and over and over again. They don’t say, “I can’t,” they don’t give up, and they don’t judge themselves for every little flop. 🙌🏻

They surround themselves by supportive people, who cheer them on. They persist and persist...until one day they cruise from point A to point B without a crash, beginning to develop a skill they will carry with them for a lifetime. 🚶🏼‍♂️🚶🏽‍♀️🚶🏿‍♂️🚶🏼‍♀️

We would never tell a baby perfecting their craft they’re doing it wrong, that they’re stupid & clumsy or to give up. But the words we say to ourselves? They’re often toxic and prevent us from moving forward. 🤚🏼

I talk to women every.single.day. that share with me that they can’t do certain things. That they feel defeated. That they feel {this close} to giving up. That they pick up momentum but then lose steam. They try to figure it out on their own. And I relate to all this pain, because I’ve been here. 😭

Those babies? They’re onto something. They allow themselves to be supported. They have a clear vision on what they are setting out to do. They are open to trying some things differently, and THEY DON’T GIVE UP. 👏🏼👏🏼

Applying these shifts 👆🏼 has completely transformed my life, and is, hands down, why I haven’t used pregnancy as an excuse to stop moving with intention, eat loads of garbage, or let my mind judge my body as it expands and changes to accommodate this HUMAN! (so crazy right?!)

Vegetable Korma

Korma is a dish originating in India, consisting of meat or vegetables braised with yogurt or cream. We went with lots of veggies and full fat Greek yogurt here. Packed with plant based proteins, cruciferous veggies and greens…trust me, you MUST try this recipe!

What You’ll Need:

2 Tbsp coconut oil

2 onions, minced

2 Tbsp fresh ginger, minced

1 Tbsp curry powder

1 (15 oz) can tomatoes (fresh work here, too)

6 c cauliflower, chopped (about 1 head)

1/2 c uncooked lentils

2 tsp salt

1 c hot, filtered water

1 bag fresh, baby spinach

1 can chickpeas, drained and rinsed

1 c 2% or full fat plain Greek yogurt

2 c brown or basmatti rice


Cook rice according to package instructions.

Meanwhile, heat the coconut oil in a large soup pot. Add onion, ginger and curry, cooking until aromatic.

Add tomato, cauliflower, lentils, salt, water, spinach and chickpeas. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook for 15 minutes.

Turn off heat. Stir in yogurt. Serve over cooked brown or basmatti rice!

I remember so clearly laying in bed at night feeling low and come up with grand plans about how I was going to "get skinny." 😆

Diet pills....Low carb....Grapefruit....Cabbage soup....I counted points, calories, portions....Over exercised....Drank my calories....Saved up and then binged… 😣

It was the consistent struggle between “getting back on track” or just saying eff it and drinking wine and binge eating SnackWells cookies for dinner, even though I just had restocked my fridge with loads of fresh produce.  🥦

I was always looking for the next big thing that was going to give me the body I really wanted, but was really stuck on the start-again-stop-again train.  And I wondered why I couldn’t get out of bed in the morning, struggled with irritable bowels and why I couldn’t “just get skinny”😆

Then, in my early 30s, about a year and a half after my son was born, I was the thinnest I have ever been -- and also the real beginning of what I now recognize was a completely warped body image.
