March 20. Adulting ain't easy. Chris has been traveling for work, so I've been solo with this human tornado who also happens to be a threenager. Hes been singing the alphabet song on repeat for 8 days. 8 freaking days. He wakes up every night, climbs in bed with me, and despite the fact that we have a king size bed, completely invades my personal space and kicks me in the face. It's like sleeping with a drunk octopus. In my attempt to have a moment of silence, I wake up early. The earlier I wake up, the earlier he wakes up. It's like he has a sixth sense. Like wtf. But here's the bright side. โ˜€๏ธHe's smart and healthy and spunky and cute. I don't have to be tied to a schedule, as my work fits around my life. Thank goodness, because trying to get out of house looking like a human seems near impossible right now. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I've just re-launched our New Coach Academy into a new self paced, online course, and am super excited about the new platform. It is going to give our team all of the resources they need to be successful!! If you are that someone who is seeking a way to a way to make the madness of your life less maddening, we should connect. I'd love for you to have the opportunity to learn not what about what I do and you can too. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Monday morning library dates with my boo ๐Ÿ˜ Monday's used to be full of anxiety and dread--hustling out the door before ziggy woke, leaving him with caregivers, a long commute and wishing the days away until the weekend came. I hustled hard to get rid of that anxiety forever and I'm looking to extend this opportunity to other mama's who want to escape the grind! Women who know they were made for more. Women who are tired of working hard just to make ends meet and can't believe how much of their paycheck goes to childcare. Mamas who want to make a difference in the lives of others, without leaving their babies. You don't have to be a mama to rock this gig. But you must be hardworking, ready to learn, and wanting to live your healthiest life! (Best job requirements ever.)

February 14. I gained 40 pounds during my pregnancy. You wonโ€™t find many pictures of me during this time, or even in the months that followed. I was filled with the fear of "letting go" and allowing my body do what it needed to do in order to accommodate a growing baby. I'm always teaching and mentoring go getters that are interested in building an online coaching business. If you think you have what it takes and are interested in learning more, send me a quick message. ๐Ÿ“ง

It could, quite possibly, be that thing that changes the course of your life โค๏ธ

And you all know how I like my whole foods ๐Ÿ˜‰ Youโ€™d have to eat a whole lot of fruits and vegetables to equal the nutrition in a single glass of Shakeologyโ€”and you probably couldnโ€™t do it for less than 170 calories. Truth be told, the majority of people are WAY MORE nutrient deficient, than they are protein deficient. So why just stop at a protein shake? 7 trips to the salad bar while toasting with my main squeeze? I'm in. ๐Ÿ˜œ

Fun Fact:

I wasnโ€™t an immediate believer in Shakeology. I mean, I didnโ€™t need to supplement my diet with some processed powder in a bag. I eat a super balanced diet. I eat so healthy! I didnโ€™t need this stuff--Not me!

November 16. I don't think anything can really prepare you for being a mama. No one tells you that you will learn to function on an interrupted sleep schedule for years. Or that you will rarely have the opportunity to eat it an uninterrupted meal. They don't tell you that you will have to rediscover your sense of self. Or that you will have to work at your marriage with great intention. No one tells you that your mind will constantly be turned on, thinking about tomorrow, reflecting on yesterday and everything in between. So sometimes, when your baby falls asleep on the way home, even when the timing is not right, you let them sleep. So you can have a moment of solidarity, a moment to reflect, to move and stretch your body, to de-stress. Because what no one tells you is on most days, you will sacrifice just about everything for this small person. Just remember to find pieces of yourself as you grow along the way. โค๏ธ

October 18. The photo on the left popped up in my memories a week or so ago. The photo on the right was taken during our last days in Colorado just a few weeks ago. So, what has changed in that time? On the leftโ†’ Ziggy was 7 months old, I was teaching out of the home full time. I was struggling with a lot of things-- I struggled with being a nursing mom who spent a lot of time away from her baby, with fin ding time for myself, with keeping things in my life as organized as I like them. I struggled with guilt--the guilt of leaving Ziggy again on the weekends to spend time with Chris or with friends. My weekends became this ongoing cycle of preparing for the week to come. Pack and unpack bags just to repack bags, repeat. I had this constant battle with myself because I was half assing everything--my role as a mom, a wife, a homeowner, a friend, a teacher, a colleague. I had totally lost sight of myself. On the right โ†’ Ziggy is now 2.5, I am still teaching, itโ€™s just different content. And I do it in my own time from anywhere with wifi. I donโ€™t struggle with that much any more-- I donโ€™t have to kiss anyone good-bye while they dream so that I can rush off to work before the sun shows its face. I know that if we have another baby, I will never have to sit in another marketing stock room and pump. I will never miss that first morning that they are standing in their crib, or the first few steps. And, I have embraced the chaos that is parenthood. I have pulled myself off of the backburner, finding a way to fit fitness back into my life, and fuel my mind with personal development daily. I look forward to social obligations, and seek out time with the people that I love. Iโ€™ve learned that internal transformations are what radiate outward, and that true self love exists. That sometimes, you have dig a little deep for it. And that when you find it, you follow your own passions, not someone elseโ€™s. Not all things change. October 8.

People ask us often how we get our 2 year old to eat a balanced diet. The answer is simple:

He's 2. There are days that he sustains life off of peanut butter and bananas. ๐Ÿ™ˆ

We don't โžก๏ธ Play the "clean plate club" game, and we don't make him eat anything that he doesn't like just because it is good for him.

๐Ÿ‘†๐ŸผTHIS is how picky eaters are made. ๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿผ

We do โžก๏ธ Fill his plate with a variety of small choices (typically what we are eating, deconstructed), and we encourage him to try everything.

Does it always work? No.

Do we have to sometimes bribe him with lollipops? Yes.

Do I allow myself to lose sleep over it? No.

I will just continue to be a positive role model, and, hopefully while he still thinks I'm cool, he will follow suit.

Any tips on tent camping with a toddler welcome.

September 19.

This time last year, I was waking up at 5am to workout, rush out the door for a 30 minute commute, just to work an 8 hour day and commute 40 minutes home. I would pick up Ziggy, play or run errands for an hour, before it was time to cook dinner, unpack bags, repack bags, eat dinner, shower, book, bed routine. I would check in with my challengers and my team before mentally preparing to repeat this grind tomorrow.

I decided I would change that.

So now, we can take a 12 day vacation in September. We leave Thursday. ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿป Today, I chose to send Ziggy to a caretaker for the day so that I could update my blog, collaborate on updating our New Coach Academy, prepare upcoming challenge group content, and squeeze in a mid day yoga sesh. I picked Ziggy up early this afternoon, in my yoga pants, and we hung out in the yard with Chris after sharing dinner. We went for a walk. We got ice cream (because, #balance). And I'm not stressed about tomorrow.

Why would I settle for the first scenario when I could have the second?? #youcantoo

ยท September 15

I was in labor for 32 hours before Ziggy came. Between that and the whirlwind of adjusting at home those first few days were exciting, full of a million emotions, and flat out exhausting.

They have you take the babe to the pediatrician a few days after they are born to be sure they are adjusting well to being earth side. Chris and I sat in the waiting room, completely disheveled, completing our paperwork. We got to the part where they ask for the parent info and we, naturally, began filling in our parent's names. It wasn't until we reached the part where it asked for SSN that we realized that WE were the parents. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

And, we've continued to figure it out as we go and have laughed a lot since.

When you wake up with a strange little man in your bed ๐Ÿ˜‚

But seriously, I remember having to get up and out the door each morning regardless of how the night went. My schedule now allows us to have slow mornings after long nights. How awesome is that?!

September 8 ยท

Well, this beautiful human began preschool today!Chris and I were able to drop him off together this morning, I worked on new coach training videos all morning, and I picked him up his afternoon. What a huge change from this time last year ๐Ÿ˜

I built this freedom while working full time, opposite hours than Chris, in one hour a day.

Did I have to make a few sacrifices? Sure. Was it worth it? In more ways than you know. #youcantoo

When I asked Chris for a napkin at dinner, Ziggy jumped up, gave everyone a napkin, and proceeded to ask us to help him put his on his lap.

I think we are doing something right.

He already appreciates each pebble, each plant, each little creature. And, he actually napped after this.

This sweet boy is 2.5 today.

He's busy, he's quirky, he's smart and funny. He's determined, fast and witty. He's my blonde haired, blue eyed partner in crime. He has changed our lives in so many ways. People ask us all the time if we remember what life was like before him (um....weekends involving late brunch with mimosas...yes, we remember ๐Ÿ˜‰). But we can't really imagine a day moving forward without him.

Happy day, Ziggy. โค๏ธ๐ŸŽˆ

September 1 ยท Ziggy had his preschool orientation today! He loved it so much that he didn't want to leave. This was the best of about 10 pictures I tried to snap on our way out The best part? I was present. Since I am my own boss, I didn't have to ask anyone or have it approved. I won't have a docked day of pay, or have to take flex time. It was important, so it came first.

August 24. Isn't it crazy that this giant toddler was once a baby in my belly?! ๐Ÿ˜ณ When I learned I was pregnant I was terrified about what would happen to my body. December 17, 2015 ยท Yesterday, there was this moment. Our current work schedules donโ€™t allow us to spend much time together as a family, so these are really special. THESE moments are what life is all about. Itโ€™s about playing at the park, building fires and burning grilled cheeses in the pie iron. Itโ€™s about watching Christmas shows and then wrapping gifts together on the unfinished basement floor. I have been working toward freedom of time since April. July 30 ยท Change. A term that I have come to know well over the last 2 years. They say that all things come in waves--and they have certainly been crashing down over the last year or so. All positive, but not easy. Why canโ€™t making a positive life change be a walk in park? I recently made a change in my life that I didnโ€™t want to make, but I had a million reasons WHY it needed to happen. The temptation to cheat or slack comes almost daily, and the fear of failure sets in. I remind myself of how far I have come and remind myself my reasons for WHY. Hereโ€™s the thing: Change is HARD. Change takes TIME. It takes CONSISTENCY. It takes WILLPOWER and most importantly, keeping your eye on the prize. And that is your WHY. We all have room to grow and make ourselves happier, healthier versions of ourselves. As I continue to grow and change, I am especially thankful for those closest to me, who see both the rays of sunshine and the thunder crashing down. with Ziggy and Chris Kaminski

June 30, 2015 ยท Yesterday was one of those days. One of those days that the baby wants to be held. All. Day. Long. The kind of day where everything that is offered for lunch and dinner is angrily thrown on the floor. The kind of day where rain clouds come in around noon and trump the sunshine. The kind of day where dinner involves a required break for a barefoot walk in the rain to reset the tone. People often ask me how I โ€œget it all done.โ€ When I made the decision to regain balance in my life, I had to reprioritize and there was a lot that I had to just LET GO of. I let go of the bathroom dust bunnies and weeds in the yard. I let go of the dishwasher being emptied each night. I let go of the cheerios sprinkled throughout the kitchenโ€ฆand my carโ€ฆand probably every square inch of our house. I let go of enjoying a baby-less shower, and blowing my hair dry. Most importantly, I made a conscious effort to let go of the negativity, and to see the positivesโ€”even on those days that the gray clouds continue crashing in. It makes days like yesterday seem okay. Iโ€™m no different than anyone. We all have good days and not-so-good days. We accomplish incredible things each and every dayโ€”itโ€™s just about taking the time to sit back and reflect every now and again. So today, I encourage you to capture moments and take time to reflect on your accomplishmentsโ€”chances are you will find your inner superhuman.

Baby Registry: A Dad's Perspective

ย

Fun Fact

My rationalization when creating a baby registry list when expecting Ziggy went something like this: "I am growing the human, so why on earth should I be expected to do all this other stuff, like figure out what he/she will need?"

Thankfully, I have an incredibly supportive husband who gladly took on the task.

He recently put together this list for one of our most favorite couples who are expecting their first baby this fall, and it was too good not to share. If you're wondering what your baby needs (and doesn't need), this is the real deal, modified from a general internet checklist.

Find my thoughts sprinkled throughout in italics. <3

Nursery furniture

The necessities:

____ Crib or co-sleeper

Do a crib for sure and make sure it does not have an attached changing table. In hindsight, ours was a bad idea. It is really nice for the first year, but Ziggy uses it to crawl out of the crib and has for a while.

____ Crib mattress

You would think they would be included, but they aren't...

____ Changing table

As I said above, get a separate changing table that will make a nice dresser later. I wish we would have done that.

____ Bassinet (though it's only safe until 3 months or 15 pounds)

We got a Moses basket with stand and loved it! Super portable and easy to move from room to room.

ย

____ Rocking chair or glider

Huge! We got a glider and still use it everyday. Love it! I think this is the one we got, or at least similar. Gliders are easier to move when you are dead tired and look like a legit piece of furniture later.

____ Humidifier or vaporizer

Helped Ziggy sleep better. Here is the one we got. (it's super quiet)

____ Dresser/chest

We just bought an old antique with character. Remember in reality, you won't really have many clothes out at a time cause they grow so fast. Essentially changing all of the baby's clothes each season.

____ Hamper

____ Baby monitor

Don't get a video monitor or you''ll just stare at all the time. We got this one, and we still never use it unless we travel. Get an extra receiver in case batteries die or so you have have it in more than one room at a time!

Exhibit A

Exhibit A

Linens

____ 2 fitted crib sheets

Make sure they are the right size...we made that mistake...

____ Crib bumper that ties on securely

We didn't use them. Babies don't really move and when they do, they'll learn. I also liked being able to hear the slats of the crib to know if he was awake or not.

____ Several thin cotton receiving blankets

Get these. Best Ever! Super soft and dry super fast.

____ 2 waterproof mattress protectors

Self explanatory...

There shouldn't be anything in the crib before the baby can roll or move freely.   Just a swaddle blanket or a sleep sack.  I can teach you how to swaddle.  I was the master and Ziggy couldn't get out all night.  Swaddling really helped him sleep, which helped us sleep.  {Once they can roll, it's a different story, see exhibit A above.}

ย

Babyproofing

We didn't really do this. Baby needs to learn how to live in our house, not the other way around. We did lock the stuff under the sinks and medicine but aside from that, we just dealt with it. If you want to babyproof, here's what "they" reccommend:

____ Gates at the top and bottom of all stairs

____ Cabinet latches

____ Drawer latches

____ Outlet covers

____ Fireplace bumper

____ Furniture anchors

____ Toilet lock

____ Corner guards for low tables

ย

Feeding

____ 8 or so bottles with newborn nipples (try several brands to find the one your baby prefers)

This is true. Ziggy liked a couple but all babies are different. Try 5 or so different brands and see which one she likes.

____ Bottle-cleaning brush and dishwasher basket <- loved this thing!

____ Bottle-drying rack

Yep, it helps a lot: the grass drying rack (we still use it almost everyday)and the twig rack that fits inside.

____ Several weeks worth of baby formula to start

We (well Sarah) breastfed so I really don't know anything about formula.

____ 6 or more bibs

Don't get white!!! They stain quickly and look nasty regardless of how clean they are. Overall a good rule for the next couple years.

____ 6 or more burp cloths

Cloth diapers (prefold diapers) are really nice to have around. They are designed to soak up a ton of moisture and are very useful.

____ Insulated cooler/carrier for outings

Any kind will work... small beer can coolers ironically hold the same shapes as baby bottles. Food for thought.

____ Dry formula dispenser

Don't know about these.

____ Bottle sterilizer

They make microwave bags that are great and super quick!

____ Bottle warmer

We just used a pot and water...you'll get good at estimating the time...

For breastfeeding

____ Nursing pillow

A big old pillow worked fine for us--but yes, you will want something designated upstairs and down to getting funky.

____ 2-3 nursing bras

I loved these simple cotton ones for around the house from Motherhood. I never really found a great nursing bra for wearing out-so honestly just stuck to my regular bras and made them work. These tanks from target were my fav--they come in a million colors--were great through pregnancy, postpartum, for nursing, and I still wear them now!

____ 2-3 boxes of nursing pads

You basically need a case of nursing pads. Be prepared.

____ 6 or more burp cloths

____ Breast pump

Talk with your insurance company and see what they will cover. Using a hand pump sucks, so do all in your power to get an electric one.

____ Breast milk storage bags or containers

The bags are clutch! Find the brand that goes with your pump.

____ Several bottles and nipples if someone else will be feeding baby pumped breast milk

Get an extra set of bottles that are compatible with your pump. Even if baby doesn't like them, you will use them to pump into and store milk in.

____ Nipple cream (for the first few weeks)

Earth Mama all day. Others recommend that you wipe cream off before feeding baby. Trust me, you will not be up for cleaning before each feeding.

Solid-food feeding

____ High chair

We love this one. It doesn't take up a lot of space and looks nice. And it was given to us from 3 very special people!

____ Plastic bibs

This style is the bomb. They catch a lot of what doesn't make it into their mouth. (which is a lot), and can be rinsed clean!

____ Infant feeding spoons

All same but after a while I like these the most. (A backpacking company makes them)

____ Infant bowl

Anything with suction cups on the bottom. If it doesn't have suction cups, don't get it until they are at least 2 years old.

____ Mess mat for under the high chair

Get a cheap, cute, dark or patterned rug from Marshalls or Gabes.

____ Baby food mill (if you're ambitious enough to puree your own baby food)

Don't waste your money on baby food makers. They are basically overpriced food processors. Use your food processor or blender!

Basic Baby Care

____ 2 packs of newborn diapers to start

Newborns are pooping machines. Like every two hours machines... Aldi makes good diapers that are pretty cheap. I honestly didn't find a difference between any of the name brands.

Don't stock up on too many newborn diapers-baby may or not wear them depending on how big they are at birth. They also grow FAST! We cloth diapered after 4 weeks. Learn more here.

____ Wipes

Same as above (we bought cloth wipes and made a simple solution. I personally think that it stopped him from getting diaper rash. He really only got diaper rash a couple of times.

____ Diaper rash ointment

We didn't use it much but when you need it, you need it! We like this one.

____ Waterproof changing table pad

____ 2-3 changing table pad covers

Yep, cheap changing table sheets.

____ Diaper pail or trash can with a lid

We got one with our cloth diaper service and just bought it. I love the thing. We can have 4 days worth of used 2 year old diapers and the basement doesn't smell. Here is ours...

____ 4-5 waterproof square or rectangular pads for under baby's bottom (protecting the cover that's protecting the pad -- you won't be sorry)

Our diaper bag (Jandd) has one build into it. Expensive but totally work it. Plus, built by a mountaineering and bike pannier company. PS, my panniers are Jandd and you don't look stupid and girly. The front unzips and has a changing station built into it. You will want one of these, too.

____ Baby Lotion

I just use my natural cream on his skin.

____ 2 hooded towels

All the same... You'll get tons of these given to you...

We started using our towels for him after about 4 months--you can cozy them up better in a big 'ol bath towel!

____ 4 washcloths

You'll get tons of them.

____ Infant tub (for after the umbilical cord falls off)

These are a little weird. We registered for one of these and hated it. Great idea, but your sink has the be exactly the right size. Then we bought a super cheap one for the bathtub and liked it..

____ Bath seat or inflatable tub-within-a-tub (for after 6 months)

Nope, just let him play in the bathtub...

____ Baby bath wash

We use this stuff... (expensive but no harsh chemicals or soaps)

A little bit goes a long way, and it's good for hair and body + no tears!

____ Baby comb and brush set

Don't know what kind we had. That's how much we used it...

____ Nail scissors/nail clippers/nail file set

I found that real ones are better. The baby ones are cheap and not sharp and thus, less safe. Go with your own.

____ Cotton swabs

Tons!

____ Cotton balls

Tons!

____ A baby-size robe

While these are insanely useless, they are so cute. Soooo... you probably won't resist buying one. Speaking of cute...

Clothing

So first things first... the less snaps and more zippers you can find, the happier you will be. When you are tired and want to just change a diaper snaps are the bain of your existence. Zippers are the best things ever invented, especially if you don't need to worry about franks and beans!

ย

____ 7 or more snap-crotch bodysuits/onesies

More or less what your baby will live in and you'll get a ton of them (with really cheesy and more than likely dumb sayings) These things a the best. They are snap closure but only three of them and you'll find that only snapping two of the three is perfectly fine and saves time in the end. I think 7 is too little unless you really like doing laundry. They become the socks or underwear of your laundry, ie, when they are all dirty, its time to do laundry...

Start with this one or maybe this one.

____ 3-4 T-shirts and/or side-snap shirts

They are functional but i feel like most of our 0-6 month tops were ones with 3 snaps around the crotch. They are nice to through on in a pinch though.

____ Several snap-up rompers

ZIP UP ROMPERS!!! Not snap up ones. Check out kid consignment stores for lightly used ones cause you'll only use them for 3-4 months before they are too small.

Examples... 13 snaps to close...or one zipper...

____ Several shirt-and-pant sets

You'll get more matching sets than you know what you do with. One note, many companies like Carter's sell combo packs where you get something like 2 pairs of pants and 3 shirts on the same hanger for super cheap. Marshall's always has a good Carters selection!

____ 7 pairs of pajamas and/or sleeping gowns

Again, zipper and no snaps but even better is the sleep sack!!! Especially for the first few months when you can't have anything in the crib, these things are warm and super easy to use!

____ Sun hat

Nice to have and fairly important. I thinking solving the whole world peace thing is easier than getting Ziggy to wear one though... Patagonia makes nice reversible ones...

____ Cold-weather hat

____ Cardigan sweater

____ Bunting or snowsuit if it gets cold

One note we heard about for these. Becareful with puffy material like down or similar materials as they will put a buffer between the baby and the straps in a car seat and can lead to movement in a car seat. We never went with puffy stuff but rather went for a gently used Patagonia Synchila fleece. same warmth but no loft. I bought ours one ebay and washed it a couple times...

A nice full body fleece suit is nice to have for a winter baby when traveling though.

____ 6 pairs of booties and/or socks

You'll get tons of these cause they're cheap and people think they're cute.

____ Baby hangers for the closet

Many places let you keep baby hangers from the store. The majority of places let you keep the hangers. Don't really worry about them.

It's nice to have:

____ A special outfit to bring baby home in and/or show her off

Just make sure you have clothes really.

____ A wearable sleep sack if it's cold, to use instead of a blanket

Strictly optional:

____ Shoes (until baby is walking outside, i.e., the toddler years)

Nope, useless unless you want to dress her up all fancy-like. maybe 6-9 months you can make an argument for them.

We loved these Robeez boots for when he first started walking.

Going Out

____ Car seat that fits a newborn

Get the combo set. I liked this one by far the best...

____ Stroller that accommodates a newborn

Nope, you'll just use the car seat for a while.

Then, if you do anything off pavement ever, you must have this.
ย

____ Diaper bag filled with diapers, wipes, and a spare outfit

____ Front carrier

We liked the ergo baby.

____ Sling (for the newborn stage)

We did use one. I actually liked it a lot . I got a bunch of shit for it but ziggy would fall asleep in it...

____ Baby backpack (for after 6 months)

Love this thing. Pricey but I has used the hell out of it.

____ Stroller that your car seat fits onto

Bob and Britax work together so everything fits well. You do need to buy an adapter though.

____ Rain cover for the stroller

You're not going to go for a walk in the rain. And if you get caught in it, you're not going to have a rain cover prepared anyway.

____ Sunshades for the car windows

We have one but don't use it. Don't get one.

____ Big diaper bag for overnight trips

We just use an old backpack or something similar

No-nos:

Mirror to see baby in the car

They say this is a no-no. But, we used it while he was rear facing to see him, and now it is one the back of the seat so he can see himself.

Other Stuff

____ Bouncer seat

We borrowed one from a friend. It was nice, but not worth buying. I would put Ziggy in it when I showered. (then again, for about $50, it might be worth it...just so much crap to keep in the house...

____ Stationary activity center

____ Swing

Again, borrowed from a friend. This is something we used daily for the first 3 months though!

For soothing

____ Several pacifiers (try different brands to see which one your baby prefers)

true. Ziggy liked these: (MAM brand)

____ Mobile for over the crib or changing table

I'm making one for you... it will be much better than the screen door I made...

____ Lullaby CDs or other soothing music

carride.jpg

We bought and use this thing every night. Get it. Night light, white noise, classical music, and ipod connection. Also download Toddler Radio on Pandora for the car and prepare to never listen to anything adult-like while cruising ever again.

The medicine cabinet

____ Thermometer

We have a touch one... but prefer the rectal ones...they seem more acurate.

____ Infant Tylenol

Yep. Sometimes a life saver

____ Nasal aspirator

Get the nosefrida! Yup, just when you thought you would never suck another human's boogers out of their nose..

____ Teething ointment or other teething remedy

Some folks have talked about amber bracelets but we just used popcicles and frozen teethers. Get a few sets of mesh teethers. They are amazing.

____ Vapor cream and/or vapor bath

never used it

____ Saline nose drops

never used it

____ Antigas medicine

Huge! Get gripewater!!! it is like a magic potion!

The Skinny on Cloth Diapering

We have cloth diapered since the beginning...there is almost too much info out there, which makes it SO confusing when you don't know what you are doing, or how to really narrow down your choices. Much like disposables, not all styles will work for all babies. I feel like a lot of it is trial and error, so be mindful of that before deciding to invest in a lot of something. I am excited to share our experience, and what has worked for us!

The First 1-4 Weeks

Use disposables. Their poop is really tarry and gnarly at first. You are getting used to enough those first few weeks, so save yourself the hassle and mess of oil slick poos. ;)

The First 2-5 Months

Diaper service. {Green Cheeks} If this is an option for you in your area, we could not recommend it more! It was amazing for us. Our diaper service brought us clean prefolds, covers and wipes each week. We would put out the dirty ones, and they swapped for clean ones right to our front door. If we were going to do it again, we would purchase our own covers and save a little on cost there. There was a start up fee of about $80 that got us a diaper pail with a large liner, a small wetbag for on the go, and a few snappies (these are like modern diaper pins), as well as an orientation. After that, the cost was about $80 monthly, which is comparable to buying disposables.

5-6 Months +

At 5.5 months, we purchased our own. We waited until then because Ziggy was in his 3rd size in this short period of time, so if we would have purchased newborn, size one, then size 2 diapers. If we were planning to have 5 kids, this may be worth it, but we aren't, so it just didn't make sense for us. We went with Thirsties Duo Hemp prefolds as opposed to cotton. They are a little less bulky, and gave us the opportunity to ditch the snappi, which we found was IMPOSSIBLE once baby started becoming more mobile. We use a simple snap cover over them tri-folded and they work great.

Night Time

We use disposables at night and for long car/air travel. Mostly because he can't feel that he is wet and he sleeps longer, or will be happier longer in the car/plane. We buy whatever is on sale when it comes to disposables; nothing fancy!

FAQ

Soooo...what do you do with the dirty ones?!

We keep a small wetbag upstairs and one down. We keep the original diaper pail with a carbon filter in the basement, and take the small bags down to dump when they are full.

How much did it cost?

We purchased one lot of diapers used from a neighbor, and a dozen used pocket diapers from Craigslist. We had our diaper service professionally strip and clean them. Viola! Like new! The rest we purchased new.

Used diapers ($180) + 15 New prefolds ($120) and 8 new covers ($115ish) + Diaper pail/wetbags, etc ($100ish) = Under $600. Keep in mind that this is for his entire diapering LIFE. So, from the time he entered a size 2 (5.5ish months-potty training)

Why don't you have an equal number of prefolds to covers?

This is a HUGE pro to using prefolds + covers. You only need 8-12 covers in rotation, as they can be hung to "air out" as long as they don't have poo on them. I give them the smell test, and if they pass, they stay out of the laundry, usually about 5 wears per cover before washing. We like Thirsties covers best. Blueberry makes good ones, too! Either way you go, always choose snaps over velcro; they get in and out of the laundry with less hassle.

What is the difference between a prefold and a pocket diaper?

Prefolds are traditional, absorbent squares of absorbent fabric. You know, like the Gerber brand that Target sells that you use for burp cloths! These are easy to trifold and set inside a basic waterproof cover.

Pockets are just that; covers with little pockets in them! The liners are rectagular in shape, and slip right into the pocket. These were great to have on hand, especially for the diaper bag or on the go, but we find that they leak for us. We put a double liner in them, and they seem to be okay, but we much prefer the prefolds. Another downside is the entire thing needs washed after each wear.

How do you (GASP!) wash them?!

We have about 20 prefolds, and 12 pocket diapers, and need to do 2 loads a week. We do 2 washes with Charlie's Soap. We started buying this soap in bulk (4 gallon powder) and washing all of our laundry with it; it is great soap!

For diapers, 2 cycles, hot and heavy duty on both, with an extra rinse at the end of the second. If I had a prewash option on my machine, I would probably do that too, but I don't and we have survived! I throw in some bleach about once per month to keep the funk out.

So, do you just wash the poop?

A question we get often, and a good one! Until baby starts eating solids, their poop is pretty runny, and there is no need to rinse prior to hitting the laundry. Once food is introduced, and you enter the "little man poop" stage, you just roll the poo off of the diaper into the toilet, or give it a few dunks in the toilet water. Kinda gross but gets the job done. You could always invest in a sprayer, too.

Wait, you make your own wipes?!

I thought this was originally SO weird! But, it is such a pain to use a disposable wipe with a cloth diaper--you have to make a stop to the trash and the diaper pail with each change. I've found as he's grown, the more wipes we go through, so we tend to use a lot of disposable wipes these days. But, we still keep a batch of cloth wipes wet with an antibacterial essential oil mix that I will share below.

And.....that's all I know! Feel free to contact me anytime; I am happy to talk cloth diapers, or anything else baby/toddler/surviving parenthood any time! Whatever you decide, it will be great for you and your baby.

Good luck and congrats!!

Cloth wipe solution, courtesy of Judy from Happy Baby Company

Using a 4c pyrex glass measuring cup, and squirt 1/2-1 teaspoon of castile soap (Dr. Bronner's works great!), a 1/2-1 teaspoon of apricot kernel oil, 6-8 drops of lavender oil and 4 or 5 drops of tea tree oil, then add about 3 1/2 c warm water.

Layer clean wipes in an empty disposable wipe box or wipe warmer, and pour solution over top. The key is including essential oils or something that will inhibit bacteria and mold growth if you want to store wet wipes, whether in a warmer or container.
